Today marks the official kickoff of The Big Read at Missoula Public Library. The Big Read is a project of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture. It has become the largest literary program in the history of the federal government, and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.
For Big Read 2012 we’ve chosen My Àntonia by Willa Cather. Throughout the month, you can stop by Missoula Public Library and its branches to pick up a free copy of the book (while they last). Then, while you read the book, you can attend programs and events around the community that highlight themes and subjects related to My Àntonia. There will be book discussions, readings, film screenings, Facebook contests, family fun activities, and more. You can pick up a calendar at the library for a full list of events.
In addition to The Big Read, were offering a Middle and Little Read, so all ages can participate in this community-wide event. The Middle Read is Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson and The Little Read is Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan. We’ll also be giving away free copies of this book at various locations.
A program we’re very excited about will be a reading by author and UM alum, Kelly Ferguson, from her book, My Life as Laura. To help promote this event and The Big Read, she has graciously offered to guest blog right here on our tumblr, so keep an eye out for upcoming posts by Kelly, and make sure to come to her reading on October 24th.
So pick up a free book, attend a program or two (or all of them!), and don’t forget to tell your friends and family about this wonderful event. Let’s make this the best Big Read ever, Missoula!
