Nerdfighters unite! This morning I found a note slipped into a library copy of An Abundance of Katherines by John Green:

Apparently, this is a thing? On the other side of the same note:

So my interest is piqued and now I have to read An Abundance of Katherines (I’ve had A Fault in Our Stars on hold for over a month, so this should tide me over until it comes). No doubt I’ll be adding my own initials to the list when I’m done and I fully expect to find more initials in the future. But how cool is it that an author inspires his fans enough to leave notes for fellow readers in his books?!

Oh, and if you’re not sure what DFTBA stands for, you can click here to find out!

Yesterday, four members of the Missoula Women for Peace (MWP),  an organization dedicated to peace and social justice in Missoula since 1970, visited Missoula Public Library to present books that received the Jane Addams Children’s Book Awards. Karen Gonzales, Children’s Librarian, accepted the books from MWP on behalf of the library, as she has done for several years. The Jane Addams Children’s Book Awards are given to books that promote peace, social justice, world community, and the equality of the sexes and races, while also meeting standards for excellence.

They presented six books: Emma’s Poem: The Voice of the Statue of Liberty by Lina Glaser, A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, Ruth and the Green Book by Calvin Alexander Ramsey, Sit-In: How Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down by Andrea Davis Pinkney, Ninth Ward by Jewell Parker Rhodes, and Birmingham Sunday by Larry Dane Brimner. These books will all be available for checkout soon. A big thanks to these wonderful women for their kind donation!

How does popular culture influence literature? Do “popular” books have lasting literary value? Explore this modern literary trend with Colbey Emmerson Reid, Assoc. Prof. of English and Humanities at York College who will be in Missoula this week. The title of Reid’s program is Women and Numbers: From Pride and Prejudice to Bridget Jones’ Diary. What effect does women’s desire for measurement (weight, height, food journals, etc.) have on identity? How is this reflected in popular literature? Join Reid for an exploration of the trend of female quantification on Wednesday, May 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s large meeting room.

Congratulations to the winners of the Missoula Public Library 4th Annual Writing Contest! We held our reception for the writing contest winners on Sunday, May 6, and were pleased to have a large enthusiastic turnout. In addition to receiving a cash prize, each first, second, and third place winner also received a certificate. To enter the writing contest, each participant in the four age categories submitted an original work of writing no longer than 2,000 words, either fiction or nonfiction. The entries were judged by professional writers, editors, and educators. Sponsors of the Missoula Public Library Writing Contest included a generous anonymous donor, Altrusa International, Inc. of Missoula, Boomswagger, and Shakespeare and Co. Booksellers. Since this is National Poetry Month, we wanted to tell you that our very own Frenchtown librarian, Heather Tone, won a poetry contest at the Boston Review a few months ago for her poem “Likenesses.” You can read the winning poem by clicking here. Tomaž Šalamun, a contest judge, had this to say about the poem: “These lines scream with joy, and yet they are as full of silence as a mysterious film projected on the night sky. They remind me of silkworms producing silk on Chinese streets in front of our very eyes.” Beautiful praise for a beautiful poem. Congratulations, Heather!
